Dates are not confirmed at the moment for 2011 but I am keeping an eye out for any updates. The most popular vistor season to Cusco is between about May & September so I would expect it to fall within these dates.

Stars Travel will be offering a fully escorted tour in 2011 with an experienced escort and we hope to see you there!

Hi! I just returned home after spending two months living in an Indigenous Quechua village in the Andes on a student research award. I am also hoping to attend the 2011 conference!

I just wanted to respond to one of the comments about Cusco. Cusco is at an elevation of about 3,310 meters above sea level. Since the altitude is pretty high, many people- however not all, experience altitude sickness. Some tips I learned while living there is 1-drink plenty of water before you land in Cusco as most people fly right into the high altitude. 2-Eat lightly on the first day or so as the altitude affects your bodies ability to digest. 3-Rest on your first day and drink plenty of fluids. Coca tea is said to help with this. And after that - just ensure every day you are drinking enough fluids. Cusco and Peru in general is an amazing place. Hope we all make it out there for the conference!

Ciao!

The conference is the first week of August 2011. I hear that the website is in development and we will all get more information soon; such as tours being arranged for before, during and after. The First Nations colleges hosted WIPCE 2002 in 75 teepees in the mountians - we look forward to meeting the growing WIPCE family in Peru.

For high quality discussion about Indigenous education, WIPCE is the best conference that my colleagues and I have ever attended (we've attended in Alberta, Hamilton and Melbourne - all distinctively great!). But what is happening with the 2011 conference. By this time, other WIPCEs have already had the call for papers and many of us need to start budgetting for the travel expense, etc. Does anyone know whether this conference is actually happening next year? Is there something that needs to happen to assist the hosts to organize it?

Anyway for our readers if you have come back here I have been pushing Stars Travel through Blair to try and get as many people as possible to travel with them. They have been the only travel agency that reward us. They give us a shirts with a WIPCE logo, we had hats, a bag. One year in addition I had a small bottle of whiskey as well as another little travel bag in addition to what they already gave us. One night was reserved at the conference to wine and dine - all at their expense. We had great times as a groups because we all got to know each other and looked out for one another..... especially in Alberquerque! When we went to Melbourne there were only 15 who travelled with them so we missed out on our escort and wine and dine! Why, because everyone thinks they get a better deal elsewhere through their universities. I wanted us to travel this time as one group with Stars Travel and I urged Blair to advertise with all the universities but as I said the universities will only deal with who they want to. But this place we are going to is not like Melbourne, Alburguerque, Hilo so I felt it was better to travel as a large group possibly for safety reasons.

In the past we had Wendy Thompsom as our escort. No one better! We got through customs just like that! No queuing up like we do as small groups. The old people didn't have to worry about their luggage - all the young took care of those because of the speedy way we went through! It was amusing to see them all sitting there like royalty just waiting till all the bags were safely sent on their way or retrieved. She rented a car and ferried our old people to and from the venue and even took them on excursions. Now that I qualify she too has left. But who knows?

So why not try them?

Nga mihi nui.
